SOPHIA BAETE is an American Mezzo Soprano with a burning passion for telling stories on stage. Currently, Ms. Baete is a second year master’s student in Vocal Arts at The Juilliard School where she also completed her undergraduate studies under the tutelage of Darrell Babidge. Sophia is proud to be a Jerome L. Greene Fellow at The Juilliard School. The Jerome L. Greene Foundation graciously deemed Ms. Baete a Fellow throughout the entirety of her undergraduate degree and now continues to do so through her Master’s degree at The Juilliard School.

As Sophia embarks on the final year of her master’s degree, she is delighted to perform the Berio Folk Songs under the baton of Barbara Hannigan in collaboration with the Juilliard Orchestra. In December, she will return to Caramoor Music Center to give a series of solo holiday recitals in partnership with Francesco Barfoed. March brings another collaboration with Carnegie Hall, this time for their City Wide Recital Series in partnership with Karen Delavan. Ms. Baete is immensely appreciative of any opportunity she receives to work with this esteemed institution. Finally, Sophia is eager to make her role debut as Meg in Verdi’s Falstaff with Juilliard Opera in the spring. Additionally, Sophia has the privilege of covering Gertrud in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel with Juilliard Opera.

Sophia was thrilled to begin 2025 with her Carnegie Hall debut as a Young Artist in Carnegie Hall’s prestigious SongStudio. She also made her Alice Tully Hall debut, performing Un Pâtre in Ravel’s L'enfant et les sortilèges with Juilliard Opera. March brought a return to Carnegie Hall, where Sophia performed the world premiere of Matthew Aucoin’s piece, This Earth, as part of the Juilliard at Zankel Hall series. For her summer season, Sophia was honored to return as a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) for a second consecutive season, where she made her OTSL debut as Sally in Die Fledermaus. Following her time in Saint Louis, she happily served as a vocal fellow for Ravinia Steans Music Institute. Additionally, Sophia had the privilege of covering Mère Marie in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites and Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte with Juilliard Opera.

In the spring of 2024, Sophia made her Lincoln Center and Caramoor debuts as a 2024 Schwab Vocal Rising Star. She continued her longstanding collaboration with New York Festival of Song, performing as the Mezzo-Soloist in Ned Rorem at 100 at Peter Jay Sharp Theater and Eros & Co. at both Merkin Hall and Caramoor Music Center. That same season, Sophia was honored to be a 2024 Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. She also performed excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen with the Washington Chamber Orchestra in Washington, D.C., made her role debut as La Signora Guidotti in Nino Rota’s I due timidi with Juilliard Opera, and workshopped selections from Bizet’s Carmen, singing Carmen, under Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin with the Juilliard Orchestra. Additionally, Sophia had the privilege of taping a performance for WQXR Radio in collaboration with The Denyce Graves Foundation.

During the 2022/23 season, Sophia Baete made her role debut as La Suora Zelatrice in Puccini’s Suor Angelica with Juilliard Opera at Peter Jay Sharp Theater. She also appeared as the Mezzo-Soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. That season, Sophia was honored to join the inaugural Shared Voices cohort with The Denyce Graves Foundation and was named a First Prize Winner of the Schmidt Undergraduate Vocal Competition – Upper Division. She also made her New York Festival of Song debut as a Mezzo-Soloist in Night & Day U.S.A. with Steven Blier, studied at Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artist Vocal Academy, and concluded the season as the Mezzo-Soloist in 100 Years of Broadway Love with New York Festival of Song and Steven Blier.

In 2021, Sophia made her Juilliard Opera debut as Hippolyta in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. That same year, she performed as Dewman in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel with the Chautauqua Institution and was honored as a First Prize Winner of the Schmidt Undergraduate Vocal Competition – Lower Division.

ALL of these experiences to date have been pivotal in shaping her artistic journey, and she remains filled with the utmost gratitude for the opportunities that continue to inspire her artistry and the people who lay hands on her journey.
